When is Eid Ul Adha 2017
When is Eid Ul Adha 2017
Sometimes known as the Greater Eid or Feast of the Sacrifice, Eid al-Adha honours the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission to God.
His son was willing for his father to sacrifice him, as he also believed it was God's will.
But just before Abraham was to kill his son God intervened and gave him a ram to sacrifice instead.
Therefore Eid al-Adha is often celebrated with the sacrifice of a cow, goat, lamb or other animal.
The meat is then divided three ways; one-third eaten by the family in a feast, one third for friends and one third for the poor.
However, people are now donating money to charity instead of sacrificing an animal.

And many purchase halal meat from the butcher to share.
This is all you need to know:
When is Eid ul Adha 2017?
In 2017, Eid ul Adha is expected to start on Friday, September 1, and end four days later on Tuesday, September 5.
Whereas Eid al-Fitr comes at the start of the month of Shawwal (after the end of Ramadan), Eid ul Adha is towards the middle of a month.
It starts on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar.
Eid ul Adha lasts until the 13th day of the month.
The date is not known for certain until the start of Dhu al-Hijjah has been determined by a sighting of the moon.
In 2016, Eid ul Adha was 11 days later, on September 12.
What happens on Eid al-Adha?
The festival begins with prayers, followed by a sermon called a khutbah.
The festival is also marked by visiting family and friends and giving gifts.
Eid al-Adha is also seen by many as a time for a new start, to forgive and build better relationships.
What is the difference between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month in which Muslims fast during daylight hours, but both holy days vary year by year with the date determined by the Islamic calendar.
